KNX, answered.

The questions we hear most from homeowners, architects and designers about KNX automation in South Africa.

What is KNX?

KNX is the global open standard for home and building automation. It is a wired bus that lets lighting, climate, shading, energy and security all speak one language, independent of any single manufacturer or cloud — so the system keeps working and stays serviceable for the life of the building.

What does KnxLogic do?

KnxLogic designs, programs and commissions KNX systems for new builds and major renovations. We are based in South Africa and work both locally and on select international projects, alongside architects, interior designers and builders — from the first drawing through to final commissioning and support.

How much does a KNX system cost in South Africa?

It is quoted per project, because it scales with the home and the systems you automate. As a guide to component pricing, Hager KNX switching actuators run roughly R7,200 to R21,400 ex VAT depending on channel count; a whole-home system is scoped from your drawings. We give an indicative range up front and a firm quote against the design.

Is KNX better than an app-based or single-brand smart home?

KNX is open and wired, so it does not depend on Wi-Fi or a vendor’s cloud, is not locked to one brand, and lasts as long as the building. Apps and voice sit on top for convenience, but the everyday control lives in discreet wall keypads that always work.

Do you work with architects and interior designers?

Yes — ideally from the first drawing. We design the KNX topology alongside the architect so the installation is seamless, the keypads are minimal and discreet, and nothing is bolted on at the end.

What can a KNX system control?

Lighting and scenes, zoned heating and cooling, blinds and shading, energy monitoring, hot water, and security and access — all coordinated on one bus and controlled from keypads or an app.

Which brands and equipment do you use?

We build with best-in-class KNX equipment: Hager, Ekinex, Faradite, Zennio, 1Home, Airzone, Geyserwise and Home Assistant. Everything is chosen to keep the system open, discreet and serviceable.

Do we own the system, or is it locked to KnxLogic?

You own it. Because KNX is an open standard, your installation is not tied to us or to a single vendor’s cloud. We stay on call as the home evolves, but you are never locked in.

Where do you work?

KnxLogic is based in South Africa and works on projects nationwide, and we also take on select projects internationally. Wherever the site is, we partner with the architects, designers and builders on it.
