Everyone's suddenly selling "local-first." One of them already lied about it once.

Anker stood on stage at IFA in Berlin this week and made the exact pitch I've been making to clients for years: your footage should never leave your house.
The product is called MindBase. It's an AI home hub with up to 48TB of local, expandable storage for camera recordings, household files and photos. No monthly fee to keep your doorbell clips. No data centre somewhere holding video of your kitchen. CEO Steven Yang framed it around three things the home needs: connection, local intelligence, and what he called "memory that stays in the home under the family's control."
I'd have written that phrase myself. It's the whole argument for a wired, local, open-standard system, arriving from a company that spent the last decade doing the opposite.
What's actually in the box
MindBase leans on three pieces. EasyOmni Link handles the connections, pulling together close to 100 of Anker's own devices plus hundreds of Matter-compatible products, and it's built to sit alongside Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Home Assistant rather than replace them. TrueSmart Agent is the on-device AI, running on a compute card Anker rates at 26 TOPS, handling tasks locally instead of shipping them to a server. EverSafe Memory is the storage layer, working like a NAS with natural-language search, so you can ask for the clip of the delivery driver on Sunday afternoon instead of scrubbing through hours of footage.
On paper, that's a serious local-first architecture. There's no price and no ship date yet, so for now it's a preview, not a product on shelves.
The part Anker has to answer for
Here's what makes this one worth a second look rather than a straight writeup. Anker's camera brand, eufy, already sold this exact promise once. In late 2022, researchers found that eufy cameras marketed as local-only were quietly uploading thumbnail images to the cloud, and that live streams from some models could be opened in plain video players like VLC without encryption. Anker disputed the reporting at first, then admitted in early 2023 that its cameras hadn't shipped with the end-to-end encryption it had advertised. It apologised. A class action followed.
None of that makes MindBase a bad product before it's even shipped. But it does mean the central claim, that your data stays in the house, needs checking rather than taking on faith. Anker is asking to be trusted on precisely the point where it wasn't trustworthy before, with a box that's now meant to hold years of footage and family photos instead of a thumbnail. That's a bigger ask, not a smaller one.
Why I care about this beyond the schadenfreude
The bigger story here isn't really about Anker. It's about what it means when the biggest names in consumer smart home tech start marketing "local-first" as a headline feature. For a decade, the entire industry trained people to accept cloud dependency, subscriptions and someone else's server as just how a smart home works. That MindBase exists at all is an admission that customers stopped buying that.
But a marketing claim and a verifiable architecture are not the same thing. When a company tells you data stays local, you're trusting a business with a commercial incentive to eventually sell you cloud services too. When a system is genuinely local by design, you don't need to trust anyone's word, because you can see it: the command from switch to light runs over a physical bus in your walls, and there's no server for it to detour through even if someone wanted it to.
That's the actual difference between "local-first" as a feature Anker can ship, patch, or quietly walk back in a firmware update, and "local by architecture," which is what an open, wired standard has been doing the whole time, with no scandal to walk back from because there was never a cloud shortcut to take.
What to ask your installer
If you're briefing a project and someone tells you their system is local, ask them to walk you through what physically happens between you flipping a switch and the light turning on. If any part of that path is "it checks in with a server first," it isn't local, whatever the box says. A properly local system should keep running lights, blinds and climate control with the internet switched off entirely, which matters here in a way it doesn't in markets with reliable connectivity. Load shedding and patchy fibre don't care what a hub's marketing copy promises.
Anker might build MindBase exactly as described. I hope they do. It's still worth remembering that "local-first" only became a headline in 2026 because customers got tired of being sold the alternative, and the company making the loudest promise about it is the one with the most explaining still to do.
