A Gas Detector in the Wrong Spot Is Basically Decoration

More South African homes are running on gas than a few years ago. Gas hobs instead of induction plates that die the moment the power does, gas heaters, gas geysers, LPG bottles in a cupboard on the patio as backup for exactly the nights load shedding lines up with dinner. It's a sensible response to an unreliable grid. It also means more households have an invisible leak risk sitting somewhere in the house that a smoke detector was never designed to catch.
A gas detector fixes that, but only if it's actually in the right place. Get the placement wrong and you've got an expensive decoration that will very reliably fail to warn you of the one thing it exists to catch.
Natural gas rises. LPG sinks. That decides everything.
This is the part almost nobody gets right without being told, and it's simple physics once you know it. Natural gas, methane, is lighter than air, so a leak rises and pools near the ceiling. LPG and propane, the gas in those bottled cylinders, is heavier than air and sinks, pooling near the floor.
That single fact determines where a detector actually needs to sit. A natural gas detector belongs high, close to the ceiling, generally within about 30cm of it. An LPG or propane detector belongs low, close to the floor, generally within 10 to 15cm of it. Mount either one at chest height because that's where it's easy to reach, and you've built a detector that will almost never catch the gas it's meant to.
Manufacturers publish exact clearance figures for their specific units, and those override any general rule I can give you here. But the direction, up for natural gas, down for LPG, is fixed by physics and won't change device to device.
Where it actually needs to go
A few placements matter more than the rest.
Near the gas hob is the obvious one, but keep the manufacturer's minimum clearance from the cooktop itself. Too close and normal cooking fumes will set it off constantly, and a detector everyone's learned to ignore because it cries wolf is worse than no detector at all.
Close to a boiler or gas geyser and near the gas meter matters just as much, arguably more, because those are the two most likely points an actual leak starts from.
Any garage or storage area holding an LPG cylinder needs a low-mounted detector of its own. LPG collects at floor level in an enclosed space exactly like a garage, and that's precisely the kind of space where a build-up like that can sit undetected for a while.
What to avoid: don't mount a detector near a window, door, or extractor fan. A draught can carry a leak away before it ever reaches the sensor, which delays detection at the exact moment speed matters most. And if gas appliances are spread across more than one level, a hob downstairs, a heater upstairs, put a detector at each location rather than trusting one unit to cover a whole house.
The alarm on its own is the start, not the end
A gas detector is a standalone, safety-certified device with its own alarm relay, and that relay is what makes it worth wiring into the rest of the house rather than leaving it to shout into an empty kitchen. Connect that relay to a KNX binary input and a certified installer can build a response around it: an alert straight to your phone, KNX-controlled windows opening automatically for ventilation, non-essential circuits switching off, the event logged for later review. The detector still does the one job it was built for. What changes is that something acts on it immediately, whether or not anyone's home to hear the beep.
None of this is complicated to design in. It just has to be planned before the ceiling's closed up and the gas line is buried behind a wall, same as any other part of the safety layer.
