Your Smart Home Shouldn't Look Like One

KNX Association named it as one of five smart home trends to watch in 2026: design-led, invisible technology. Not gadgets you notice. Automation you don't.
I've been watching this play out in real briefs for a while now. Clients don't ask for "smart home features" as often as they used to. They ask for lighting that just works, blinds that move on their own, one app instead of six, and no visible tech cluttering a wall they spent a fortune getting right.
KNX's own description of the trend lines up with what I'm seeing on site: presence sensors hidden in ceilings, flush-mounted switches that sit almost flat against the wall, lighting and shading that respond to time of day and occupancy instead of a remote, and a single interface replacing a pile of branded apps. Their own write-up on it is blunt about the goal: no flashing gadgets, no overwhelming tech, automation that works quietly in the background so the design gets to be the thing you notice.
Here's the part that gets skipped when this trend gets written up as purely a design story: none of it is a decision you make after the fact. It's a wiring decision, made before the walls exist.
A hidden presence sensor in a ceiling still needs a cable route planned before the slab is poured or the ceiling boarded. A flush switch that sits nearly invisible against a wall still needs a properly positioned recessed box behind it, decided before plaster goes on. A motorised blind that operates with no visible control still needs power and a signal cable run to the head rail, planned before the pelmet is built. None of that is retrofit work. Chase a finished wall to add it later and you've already lost the "invisible" part of invisible tech.
This is exactly why I keep telling architects and designers the automation conversation needs to sit at the same table as the floor plan, not arrive after it's signed off. "We want it to feel effortless and disappear into the design" is a brief I enjoy getting. It only works if someone maps every sensor, actuator and cable run against the build programme before first fix, not during snagging three weeks before handover.
The mechanics behind it are simpler than people expect once it's planned properly. A KNX bus line is a single twisted pair carrying both power and data to every sensor and keypad on that line, so a hidden ceiling sensor or a flush wall panel doesn't need its own dedicated home-run cable back to a switchboard, it just needs to reach the bus. That's what makes truly invisible integration realistic across a whole house instead of a one-room party trick. It's also why the single-app promise actually holds up in practice: every device on that bus is one system with one address scheme, not six manufacturer apps stitched together and hoping they stay compatible.
None of this is new to KNX specifically. It's been the actual engineering behind "the tech disappears" for more than 30 years. The industry is only now getting around to calling it a design trend. What's changed is that architects are asking for it by name, at concept stage, on the brief, instead of it being something negotiated room by room after the design is already locked.
It also fits the way a lot of Joburg architecture is heading right now: bigger glazing, cleaner facades, fewer visible fixtures, minimalist interiors that a bank of switch plates and a wall-mounted thermostat ruins. That look and full automation aren't in tension. They only conflict when the automation gets treated as an add-on instead of part of the design brief from day one.
If you're planning a build and want the automation to properly disappear into the finish, that conversation needs to happen before the first-fix electrician is on site, not as a punch list item at the end. Bring it to the table early and the invisible part actually happens. Leave it for later and you end up with surface trunking, retrofit boxes, or a system that only half does what was promised on the mood board.
