Why I put DALI behind almost every KNX lighting install

A question I get from architects fairly often: if KNX can already switch and dim lights, why add another protocol on top of it? The honest answer is that KNX is brilliant at deciding what the lights should do and terrible at actually being the lighting protocol. DALI is the other way round. Put them together properly and you get the best of both. Skip the DALI layer and you get a KNX system that dims in visible steps and can't tell you when a driver has died.
Two different jobs
KNX is a building automation bus. It ties lighting, blinds, HVAC, security and access control together on one network and scales from a small apartment to tens of thousands of devices across a whole building. What it's not is a lighting protocol. A standard KNX dimming actuator switches a relay or a 1-10V line, in fixed groups, with no idea what's actually happening at the fixture.
DALI, Digital Addressable Lighting Interface, was built specifically for the lighting layer. Every driver on a DALI line gets its own address, up to 64 of them per line, so you can address a single downlight independently from the fitting next to it, or group and regroup them in software without rewiring anything. A KNX-DALI gateway sits between the two, translating a KNX scene command like "evening, living room" into individual DALI instructions to every driver in that scene, and reporting back status, faults and energy data the other way.
Why DALI-2 specifically, not DALI-1
This is the detail most sales conversations skip. DALI version 1 products were self-certified: a manufacturer declared compliance and that was that, which is exactly how you end up with a downlight from one brand that doesn't quite behave right next to a driver from another. DALI-2, the current standard, requires independent, verified testing by the DALI Alliance before a product can carry the logo. It also brought control devices, sensors, switches and application controllers, into the certification scope for the first time. DALI-1 only ever certified the control gear (the drivers), not the things telling them what to do. Practically, that means a DALI-2 system with certified gear from different manufacturers is far more likely to actually interoperate the way the spec says it should, instead of you discovering the gap on site.
What the fixture layer actually gives you
A few things a KNX-only lighting setup can't:
Individually addressed, flicker-free dimming curves, so a scene fades evenly instead of stepping down in visible jumps. Tunable white and full colour control through DALI's DT8 device type, which is what makes proper human-centric or circadian lighting possible rather than a fixed warm/cool toggle. And, increasingly, real diagnostic and energy data. The DALI energy reporting standard, device type 51, lets a certified driver report its own power draw and operating status back through the gateway. Combined with per-driver fault reporting, that turns "a light in the hallway is out" from a Saturday afternoon spent testing bulbs into a status line in a log telling you exactly which driver failed and when.
None of that shows up in the demo. It shows up eighteen months later when a client calls about a flickering light and your integrator can tell them which fitting to check before anyone drives out.
Where this goes wrong
The failure mode I see most is a KNX system installed without a proper DALI backbone behind the lighting, because it was cheaper at quote stage or nobody flagged it before the ceiling closed. The lights work. They switch, they dim in rough steps, scenes exist. What's missing is the resolution: individual fixture control, real diagnostics, smooth colour and dimming behaviour, the things that make the difference between a lighting scene that reads as considered and one that reads as "the lights went down a bit."
Spec it at the brief stage
If lighting matters to a project, and it usually does more than anything else in the room, ask for a DALI backbone behind the KNX system from day one. That means DALI-2 certified drivers, a gateway sized properly for the actual fixture count rather than a generic box crammed onto a bigger install, and DALI wiring runs planned alongside the KNX bus at design stage instead of squeezed in once the ceiling's already closed. It costs more at quote stage than a straight KNX dimming actuator. It's also the difference between a lighting system that just turns on and off, and one that actually does what an architect specified it to do.
